Truckee Police Cpl. Roy Richner announced his retirement for the end of May. Richner will stay on as a reserve officer with the department and his position has yet to be filled.
Another pioneer from the Truckee Police Department has announced his retirement at the end of May after serving 31 years in law enforcement.
Cpl. Roy Richner will serve his last day at the department on May 31, but said he will stay on as a reserve officer indefinitely.
“I don’t think I’m ready to cut the ties yet,” Richner said. “Being a reserve officer is a way for me to help with the police department, yet not work full time for them.”
Throughout his career, Richner has received numerous awards, such as recognition from the Mothers Against Drunk Driving program. He also served on the Accident Investigation Team and as advisor of the Police Explorer program for youth ages 13 to 21 who are interested in learning more about careers in law enforcement.
“I love police work because I love helping people,” Richner said. “There’s no doubt in my mind that I’ve saved lives. It’s been a great career.”
Richner’s announcement to retire follows Truckee’s Chief of Police Scott Berry’s retirement from the department, which he announced in early May.
“We’re actively recruiting for replacements,” said Lt. Harwood Mitchell.
The Town of Truckee will be meeting with key community stakeholders such as police department officials, members of the Truckee Donner Chamber of Commerce, and representatives of the Downtown Merchants Association to discuss the future chief’s prerequisites.
Richner said his retirement plans include traveling to the East Coast to visit his grandchildren, possibly working for the Tahoe Donner Association Association and continuing to reside in Truckee.
“This has been a very neat experience to be a part of the foundation of this department,” Richner said. “I will miss working with such a great group of people.”
