Volunteers set to clean streets on Truckee Day

Community party follows cleanup

It’s time again for local residents to roll up their sleeves, head out the door and clean the streets of Truckee.

Saturday, June 7 is the fifth anniversary of the event that aims to keep the streets shining brighter in Truckee. But it’s not all work — a block party barbecue, green living expo, and golden prizes are all in the works to entice would-be street cleaners.

“It’s looking really good, we are getting a lot of interest from the community,” said Beth Ingalls, Truckee Day Coordinator.

Community members can go to their neighborhood check-in stations, available at www.truckeeday.org, between 8 and 9 a.m., and then start cleaning, Ingalls said.

“We know graduation is the same day this year, so people don’t have to commit to the whole time,” Ingalls said. “If you can only clean for 30 minutes, every little bit helps. Many hands make light work.”

In 2007, 800 volunteers collected six tons of trash, according to www.truckeeday.org, and then consumed 500 hamburgers at the barbecue, which follows at noon at the Truckee River Regional Park.

Along with the barbecue and live music, a new green living expo has been added, Ingalls said.

“There will be green businesses like Solar Wind Works, Truckee Biofuels, Fair and Green, and other businesses and environmental groups,” Ingalls said.

JD Hoss, owner of JD Hoss Hardwoods and Carpets, and KTKE 101.5 DJ, is also returning with golden prizes for participating cleaners.

“I’m passionate about Truckee Day because this is my home first, because I have a business here, and because I’m prideful of our town,” Hoss said. “The last thing we want is when people come to visit they see a messy town.”

Prizes include the golden pizza; a pizza party at Rubicon Pizza, a golden coffee mug; free coffee for a year from Tuff Beans, a golden ski; a pair of kid’s skis from Head North, a golden bone; a stay for a pet at Truckee Tahoe Kennels, and the golden shield; a dinner at Plumpjack Café and a night stay at Plumpjack Squaw Valley Inn.

Each prize will be hidden where Truckee Day volunteers might come across them while cleaning, Hoss said.
