Blue Canyon fire rages; Yuba fire dwindles

The Yuba River Complex of wildland blazes in Nevada and Sierra counties is nearing 100 percent containment, and some who fought it are now being sent to other fires, including the American River Complex in Placer County.

That 5,000-acre complex is only 20 percent contained and the 3,700-acre Government Springs Fire within it near Blue Canyon continued to rage last night with zero containment.

“We are expecting the Government Springs Fire to be very active today, perhaps our most active day yet,” said fire information officer Bob Summerfield Wednesday at the complex command center.

Smoke from those fires and the 12,000-acre Canyon Complex in Plumas County continue to bring smoke into Nevada County, although particulate levels are no longer in the extreme danger zone.

Meanwhile, there are 1,459 fires burning in California on almost 436,000 acres according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
