Congressional District Four delegate Christa Darlington has returned from the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver and sat down with the Sierra Sun to share her thoughts and experiences.
Who did you think some of the most memorable speakers were and why?
I was surprised by how well Sen. John Kerry did. He made really good points about the difference between Sen. McCain and Candidate McCain. I was also thrilled with Gov. Schweitzer's speech — he is the Governor of Montana. He talked about the need to end our dependence on foreign oil, and said "even if we drilled in every back yard of every house that John McCain doesn’t know he has, we would still come up short." I believe he delivered the best non-headliner speech of the convention.
When we interviewed you before, you said you were looking forward to speeches by Michelle Obama and Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius. Did they meet or exceed your expectations?
Michelle did a great job showing the American people who she was, I was very happy with it. Gov. Sebelius is a great leader, though I don’t think that night was her best speech.
What do you think about the selection of Senator Joe Biden as Obama's running mate?
Joe brings a lot to the table. The thing I like the best about him is that he really showed genuine excitement about being chosen to be Vice President. He was really over the moon, like he was thrilled to be Obama's #2.
What were some of the points Obama made during his acceptance speech that you found most compelling?
Enough of the policies of the past.
What was the energy in the arena like when he was delivering his speech? Electrifying and thrilling, especially from the front row. I was lucky enough to be chosen to sit in the front row and there were about 12 delegates chosen for this honor.
As a delegate attending your first convention, were there any events, speakers, parties or activities that surprised you?
The California delegation had its party at the Denver Museum of History and Science. This museum is world class — it really impressed me. I highly recommend it to families who visit Denver!
What were some of the issues discussed that are significant for our region?
Global warming and biomass, and getting women elected into office.
Was there anything you saw that viewers at home wouldn't have seen on television?
Lots of tired news people.
Were there many protesters? What were they speaking out against?
Mainly abortion.
What will your next move be as a campaign organizer?
We have a fundraiser in North Auburn on Sunday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. and a Camp Obama volunteer training on Monday Sept. 8 at 5:30 p.m. in Truckee. Anyone who is interested can contact me to attend. I think this was once in a lifetime, but who knows!
