Go Big skate contest
The Go Big Project is putting on its Final Cut Skate Contest at the Truckee Skate Park on Oct. 4. Skaters will session the park from noon until sunset and compete for a chance to win a pro contract with Khiro Skateboards. The entire session will be filmed and the movie will premier a week later, revealing the winners. All competitors will receive a DVD of the movie as well as a chance to win a Khiro skate setup, score some swag and chill with X Games skate gold medalist Mako Urabe. Climbing wall info sought
The Truckee-Donner Recreation & Park District (TDRPD) is looking for local citizens to help plan its 29-foot climbing wall for the new Community Center, which is scheduled to open November 2009. The TDRPD wants local climbers to give input on the structure and equipment to be selected. The first meeting will be held on Monday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. at the old Community Center at 10046 Church Street in Truckee. If interested call Dan OGorman at the District Office at 582-7720.
Youth golf program
The First Tee of Northern Nevada (www.tftnn.org), in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe, Lake Tahoe Truckee Youth Golf Foundation and Old Brockway Golf Course, is offering golf and life skills education programs for youth in the North Lake Tahoe and Truckee area. The Nevada County Fish and Wildlife Commission will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. at the Truckee Sanitary District Board Room (12304 Joerger Road in Truckee). Highlighting the meeting will be a presentation by Jason Roberts, environmental scientist with the California Department of Fish and Game, on aquatic invasive species, focusing on the Quagga Mussel.

A silent auction will be held to help support XTERRA triathlete Jamie Whitmore, who is battling cancer, on Friday, Oct. 3 from 1-6 p.m. and on Saturday Oct. 4 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Village Green in Incline Village. Items being auctioned include high-end sporting goods, including a signed Eli Manning jersey and a specialized mountain bike donated by Ned Overend. Matchstick Productions new release, CLAIM, The Greatest Ski Movie... EVER! makes its Lake Tahoe debut on Saturday, Oct. 4 in the Olympic Village Lodge at Squaw Valley USA. This premiere marks MSPs 20th ski film release. Tickets for the Squaw CLAIM are $10 and are on sale now at Porters in Tahoe City, Truckee and Incline Village, and are also available at the door. Two shows are scheduled the first at 7 p.m. and the second at 9 p.m. Doors open at 6 for the 7 p.m. show and 8:15 for the 9 p.m. show.
