Children put end pieces on a boardwalk in Martis Valley at last year's Truckee River Day. It was constructed to protect the meadow in a wet area of the trail that lead to heavy degradation of the meadow. Since the board walk was built, the meadow has grown back in.

Each year since 1996, hundreds of volunteers have participated in numerous restoration projects throughout the Truckee River watershed. Truckee River Day has had huge support from the community and visitors since its inception. The first Truckee River Day was launched with three weeks of planning, and 400 volunteers arrived to help out. Volunteer numbers have ranged from 400-800 each year.
Truckee River Day will be Sunday, Oct. 19. Several exciting restoration projects are planned, including work in the Davies/Merrill watershed, Martis Valley, Tahoe Donner, Coldstream Canyon, Negro Canyon and the Truckee River Legacy Trail and other locations. There will be activities appropriate for the whole family. Pre-registration is required – please register by Oct. 12 to help with planning.
The Truckee River Watershed Council (TRWC) is the sponsoring organization for Truckee River Day. TRWC focuses on collaborative solutions for improving water quality and aquatic and riparian habitat. Other partners for Truckee River Day include the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, California Department of Fish and Game, Truckee Donner Land Trust, the Villager Nursery, and California State Parks.
Don’t miss the River Day Fair at the end of the day. It will take place at Granite Flat Campground and will feature food and exhibits. There will be a trout release at 4 p.m. – children should bring a clean bucket if they want to participate.
