Alder Creek girls upset Carson on the road

Print Comment
Improving steadily each week, the Alder Creek Middle School eighth-grade girls basketball team traveled to Carson Middle School and walked away with a 29-21 upset against the third-place team.

Carson started off fast and strong, immediately putting the Cougars in a four-point hole before the first minute expired in the opening quarter.

After a quick timeout the Cougars adjusted to Carson’s full-court trap to take an 8-7 lead at the first break.

The second quarter was evenly played with both teams pressing and causing turnovers. After the half, Alder Creek took control of the game with a tremendous full-court press and the perfect execution in breaking Carson’s press to take the lead.

Alder Creek was led offensively by Sydney English with 11 points, followed by Katie Hamill with eight points, Olivia Duner with six, Shelby Sommer with four and Ashley Harris with two.

Defensively, Jackie Bolton dominated the boards and finished with five blocked shots. Aldonia Fernandez and Hannah Smith played exceptional off the bench with help from Reily Jonas, Michaela Ideker, Mariana Van Enoo and Heather Schmidt.

UP NEXT: The Cougars play their last home game on Tuesday, Oct. 14 against South Lake Tahoe before preparing for league playoffs.
