Take stats earn cash

The U.S. Census Bureau will be hiring hundreds of thousands of workers over the next two years to help conduct to 2010 census. There will be local jobs paying $15 to $18 per hour plus mileage allowance for the minimal use of your personal car. Most jobs will be 20 to 30 hours per week, on your own schedule. Some work is required on weekends and evenings when people are likely to be found at home.

Snowshoe under full moon

Sugar Pine Point State Park Rangers will lead adventures out into the moonlight around the Ehrman Mansion and along the West Shore. For those new to the sport, there will be a beginner’s clinic at 6:30 p.m. Tour begins at 7 p.m. All proceeds support the Sierra State Parks Foundation. Meet in the day-use area parking lot. Wear winter boots and dress accordingly. Reservations required, call 525-9920, cost is $12 per person. Kinds under 12 are free (includes snowshoe rentals).

Free film at Sawtooth Ridge

The Alpenglow Sports Winter Film Series continues at Sawtooth Ridge Cafe. Catch “Bean Bowers — The Heart of Ski Mountaineering,” Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. free of charge. From the far northern Alaskan Ranges to the Ice caps of Patagonia and the cold powder of Montana Bean Bowers has taken his Skis and camera to capture the beauty, challenge and adventure of skiing far from the lifts. His unique ski mountaineering experiences include kite skiing across the Patagonian ice cap with Andrew McLean to access never before skied chutes in a wild setting.

Donner has

interpretive

programs

Donner Memorial State Park’s Winter Interpretive Programs are free, fun and outdoors. There is a $7 per vehicle parking fee which also includes museum entrance. Participants must bring their own equipment — snowshoes or cross country skis — dress for winter conditions and carry water.

Experience the winter wilderness through the eyes of the Donner Party who were stranded in the winter of 1846-47 on Donner Party Snowshoe Hikes 10:30 a.m. on Saturdays, Jan. 10, Feb. 14 and March 21. Visit the sites where they camped then snowshoe through the woods to the shore of Donner Lake for a glimpse of the barrier of Donner Pass.

Meet in trip leader Veneta Stewart in front of the flagpole in front of the museum for a two-hour, one-mile snowshoe through history.
