Tech Talk - Find online discounts

Dear Ernie,

My New Year’s resolution is to pinch pennies whenever and wherever possible. What are the best online deal finders, price comparators and product search engines?

Signed,

Pinching Penny

Dear Penny,

Online bargain shoppers rejoice! I’ve compiled a sampling of some of my online favorite discount diviners.

Deal Finder Fundamentals

The basic premise behind the deal search engines is this: Enter the product you are shopping for with a suggested price point and the site returns with the best deals. Some notable sites of this genre include: BeatMyPrice.com, GotoDaily.com and FreeShipping.org.

Price Drop Notifiers Like a devoted sales clerk who calls you when the killer leather jacket you’ve been eyeing goes onto the half-off rack, price drop notifiers monitor the pricing on your selected items. When the item goes on sale, the service will contact you via email. While they all promise to not share the email address or use it inappropriately, some users may prefer to set up a spare free web mail account, i.e. Gmail. Some good price watcher sites include ShoppingNotes.com, ZingSale.com and SavvyCircle.com.

iPhone App Favorite – iSloshed?

Wondering if you’re too tipsy to drive? Once again, it’s iPhone to the rescue. There are several downloadable iPhone applications that can test your sobriety through blood-alcohol calculators and balance tests. Understandably, some are more trustworthy than others … just like your friends at the bar. Here are four iPhone sobriety check applications that range in price from 99 cents to $2.99: RU Drunk, BarHopper, Drunkulator and Drink Timer. Although nothing beats good common sense when it comes to imbibing, these apps can help to keep you safe … and legal. Readers share tips and questions: Have a great tech tip that you’d like to share? Post it on the Sierra Sun online site’s comments section.
