TAHOE BASIN — Former California State Senator Byron D. Sher has been appointed to the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Governing Board by the California Senate Rules Committee.
Sher replaces former U.S. Congressman Jerome Waldie, who stepped down from the board in December after 16 years. Sher’s first board meeting was Jan. 28.
“Lake Tahoe is an environmental treasure and an important natural resource for both states,” Sher said. “I am honored to be called upon to represent the interests of the people of California as a member of the TRPA board.”
Sher graduated from Harvard law school in 1952. He has held a number of academic teaching positions, including at Harvard, Stanford Law School, and the University of Southern California.
He was a Palo Alto city council member who served two terms as mayor during the 1970s before being elected to the State Assembly in 1980. He served in the State Senate from 1996 to 2004.
Sher was the Senate Rules Committee appointee to the Sierra Nevada Conservancy Governing Board from 2005 until last month. He lives in El Dorado County, in the Sierra Nevada foothills.
The 15-member TRPA Governing Board consists of seven California members, seven Nevada members and one Presidential appointee.
Sher is the fifth new member to be seated this year. One California seat vacated in December by former State Senator Tim Leslie remains vacant. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is seeking a replacement for Leslie.
