TRUCKEE — The Truckee Town Council approved a railroad museum planned for downtown last week.
While larger plans for a railroad museum including a number of cars, engines, and other rolling stock will have to wait for Railyard Development plans to be complete, the Truckee Donner Railroad Society has received the green light to move a caboose next to the train depot on Donner Pass Road as a temporary home.
“We are assuming we’ll move it over mid-May,” said Bob Bell, president of the society. “Then we hope to open in mid-summer, we’re shooting for the Fourth of July weekend.”
The caboose will be put in the parking lot next to the train depot that houses the Truckee Donner Chamber of Commerce, and will contain displays about the role of the railroad in Truckee.
Bell said displays will include information on snow removal trains, the helper service, Chinese workers, tourism, the Tahoe to Truckee line, logging, a children’s area, and plans for the future of the museum.
According to town staff reports, the town will lease the space to the railroad society for five years at $1 per year.
Bell said they still have to get permits from the building department, which he said he hopes to obtain in the next week.
