Forest Service Crews contain fires at well under an acre



TAHOE NATIONAL FOREST — Thursday’s thunderstorms netted 113 lightning strikes and six small fires in the national forest.

According to a press release from the U.S. Forest Service, all fire were less than a quarter acre in size, and most were in the Sierraville area. Three fires were near the cemetery in Sierra Valley, one between Sattley and Calpine, and one west of Independence Lake.

Forest Service fire personnel contained four of the fires Thursday evening, and the rest were expected to be contained today (Friday).

Another fire near the Eagle Lakes turnoff on Interstate 80 was also contained Thursday evening, according to the press release.

Along with the numerous lightning strikes, the U.S. Forest Service reported considerable precipitation on the east side of Tahoe National Forest.

Additional lightning and thunderstorms are expected today continuing through early next week.
