TAHOE VISTA — The Tahoe Twins built what seemed like a comfortable lead early, then found themselves scrapping to hold off a late-charging Reno Rockies club for a 10-7 win Wednesday night.

“That was a good one. That's a good team over there,” Twins Manager Bob Habeger said of the Rockies, who trimmed what had swelled to an 8-2 lead by the third inning to 8-7 by the bottom of the sixth.

The Twins added an insurance run in the seventh and another in the ninth, and reliever Franklin Orlando held Reno in check the final 3 1/3 innings to preserve the win.

“That got a little intense … we had too many walks and miscues, and then all of the sudden they were in the ball game,” said Habeger, whose Twins improved to 4-0 in the Western Nevada chapter of the National Adult Baseball Association.

Twins starter Jesse Hildebrandt earned the win, surrendering four runs (three earned) in five innings, giving up five hits and a walk. He recorded six strikeouts before leaving the game with an 8-4 lead after the fifth.

Left-handed reliever Drew Lipnosky took over in the sixth and almost immediately ran into trouble.

After a quick strikeout, Lipnosky walked the next three batters to load the bases, then walked the next hitter to force in a run. The Rockies pulled to within 8-6 with a deep sacrifice fly, and scored a third run in the inning when Orlando came in and issued a walk after inheriting a 2-0 count.

“We came out strong, but we've pretty much got to close it out,” said Twins outfielder Joe Thomas.

Thomas contributed to the hot start, crushing an RBI triple during a four-run first inning, and finishing the day 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Twins center fielder Nick Smith had a big day at the plate and on the basepaths, going 3 for 5 with an RBI and three runs, while running at will whenever he reached base. Twins shortstop and leadoff hitter Bobby Habeger went 2 for 4 with two runs, first baseman Jesse Brown went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run, and Hildebrandt helped his cause by driving in two runs.
