TRUCKEE, Calif. — With a new president at the wheel, the Truckee Downtown Merchants Association is growing and developing new ideas for the town's commercial core.

Alyssa Westenburg, owner of the Tourist Club downtown, was elected June 9 as the president of the Truckee Downtown Merchants Association and part of the 13-member board. The group's membership has grown to 55 members.

“We've added new members and our board is taking on new tasks,” said Stefanie Olivieri, founding member of the association.

One of the biggest priorities is Truckee Thursdays, the evening downtown event going throughout the summer.

“Last week was great,” said Andy Mond, event manager for Truckee Thursdays. “I'd estimate last week attendance was at about 400 people.”

Mark Estee, owner of Moody's Bistro & Lounge, said beautification plans are also in the works.

Downtown cleanup days, exterior white LED lights for downtown businesses and new walking maps are all a part of the plan for this summer and fall, Estee said.

Donna Wood of the White Buffalo said there's also plans to plant bulbs downtown.

She said there will also be a haunted house at the Truckee Hotel, pumpkin-carving contests and other holiday events.

Mike Preaseau, owner of the Cooking Gallery, outlined plans to increase occupancy downtown.

“We're in the works of putting together a list of properties, business owners, and working with the chamber to figure out how we can help,” Preaseau said.

On the town's side, the application to become a Historic District is being considered July 31 in Sacramento, Estee said.

David Griffith, redevelopment and housing coordinator for the town, said a number of street-scaping projects are planned for the summer and fall, along with new newspaper racks.

And all those things should benefit the town and bring in new members, Westenburg said.

“There is a lot of enthusiasm for what we are doing and the benefits are tangible,” she said.
