All night long: Truckee's Relay for Life is a 24-hour fight against cancer

Truckee is having its third Relay For Life event this summer. It's a community gathering where everyone can participate in the fight against cancer, remembering those who lost their battle with cancer, those who are fighting and those who are survivors.

This year's relay for Life, a two-hour event that reminds us “cancer never sleeps” will be held July 18-19 from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday at the Truckee High School track and soccer field. Sign-ups are underway and sponsorship opportunities are available. Contact Ruth Geresy at 587-8808, e-mail ruth@truckee.com.

“A Relay For Life is a unique opportunity for our community to come together in the fight against cancer,” said Ruth Geresy, event chair. “Many of the participants are cancer survivors, which serves as a reminder that our community is not immune to this disease and that we can actually help our friends, families and our neighbors that have been touched by cancer,” Geresy added.

Opening ceremonies, including a lap dedicated to celebrate and honor all survivors, will begin at 10 a.m. on July 18. The public is also invited to attend the luminaria ceremony, which will take place after sundown.
