JAX by the Truckee tracks

New restaurant cooking up comfort food with a twist

Truckee, Calif. - Attendees at the inaugural Truckee Chili Cookoff June 28 got a taste of things to come at Truckee's newest restaurant, JAX. The classic American seasoned chili with light jalapeno crepe topping garnered rave reviews, winning in the restaurant category and for People's Choice. This award-winning chili also provides the perfect metaphor for describing the culinary philosophy behind JAX, which offers honest food with an interesting twist.

Think decadent comfort food. It's everything people would expect from a diner — done right. On the breakfast menu, right next to the “JAX Stax” classic buttermilk pancakes, guests will find huevos Montana, a twist on the classic rancheros with chipotle cornbread as well as snow-capped benny's with snow crab hash, hollandaise and avocado. The dinner menu will include items like chipotle glazed St. Louis-style ribs and peppercorn crusted ahi niçoise salad.

Patrons won't have to wait long to try these and the numerous other delectable items on the JAX menu, as the diner is set to open on July 14.

Housed in an original 1940s diner next to Truckee's downtown railroad tracks, JAX is the vision of owner Bud Haley, along with the collective talents of executive chef Melinda Dorn and sous chef Phil Brown. In a resort town that features many top dollar-dining options, the new restaurant's reasonably priced menu is a welcome addition.

The team behind JAX wants the honest comfort food to transport— like a culinary coming home party. “During the reset we are seeing in America there is a return to more simple things,” Dorn explains. “We want to facilitate a coming home of America around the dinner table.”

Sous chef Brown believes too often restaurant chefs create food for themselves, not their clientelle. “When you come here, we're going to give you what you want,” Brown promises, adding the prices and portion sizes are appropriate.

Owner Haley expands on this vision. “We care about the food, but what we really care about is the people.”

This energetic, hands-on owner/operator sees a dinner table where everyone has a place, be it a diehard local or a second homeowner fresh off his private jet.

“This will be everyone's place where everyone feels welcome and is treated the same,” he says. “I want to see people use JAX as a hub of activity and for it to be part of the fabric of this community.”

JAX is located “At The Tracks” at 10144 West River St. Following the July 14 opening, JAX will be open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. For more information call Switchback PR + Marketing, Inc. at 550-2252.
