North Tahoe is a little less colorful today, as one of its more colorful residents has passed on. Irene Julius Wertheim, known for her bright, often rather outrageous attire, upbeat attitude, love of all forms of movement (perhaps best known locally for her participation in a belly dance troupe for years), and year around dark tan from soaking up sunshine, died of cancer this week. She was 68 years old. She loved the beach, skiing on bluebird days, shopping for new outfits, traveling, staying in rooms with the views, and dancing.
She was always in the front row of local exercise classes. Irene loved the arts and enjoyed many years serving on the North Lake Tahoe Fine Arts Council. Irene grew up in New York City where she learned to appreciate all forms of the arts, especially, on- and off-Broadway plays.
Her favorite play was Westside Story, and she often told me that her favorite music and dance was any style from Latin America. She loved Paris and Italy, second only to the sunshine in Maui, and mountains that surround Lake Tahoe.
She spent many years hiking local trails with the Incline Trampers Club. Before moving to Alpine Meadows in 1976, where she met, and later married her second husband, Andy Wertheim, she obtained a masters degree in Dance Therapy.(one of the first ever). She is survived by her two children, Ami and Jamey Julius, her husband Andy Wertheim, her stepson Brian Wertheim, and her three grandchildren Zoey, Jeselle, and Devlin Baldwin. We will miss her smiling face, turquoise nails, and generous heart.
