KINGS BEACH, Calif. — The Kings Beach Parent's Co-op recently announced plans to add a first grade class for the upcoming school year.
The small private school, located off Secline Street in Kings Beach, has been steadily adding student capacity for the last four years. The small campus started first as a preschool in 2006, before last year adding kindergarten.
“Our first year as a kindergarten was a huge success,” said Coralee Walther, president of the Co-op. “We're expanding to include a first grade now and have room for new families.”
The campus serves about 20-30 families in the preschool, Walther said, and eight students participated in the first kindergarten class.
The school employs one teacher to teach both grades this upcoming school year. Tuition runs between $300-$400 each month, Walther said, and a discount is added for families with more than one child enrolled in the school.
To enroll, students file home-schooling paperwork with their home district. Walther said 70 percent of the kindergarten and first grade classes come from Incline Village/Crystal Bay.
The first grade, due to small class size, will probably meet mornings only, Walther said. The way the school functions is the teacher instructs, and parents are required to spend at least one hour each week in the classroom and are encouraged to volunteer more of their time if they are able.
Five children are enrolled in the new first grade, Walther said, and the school is hoping for more students before class starts in late August.
She said the school hasn't benefited in enrollment from the budget and recall concerns affecting parents in the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District.
“We thought we'd have more, but a lot of the families in Kings Beach who have to bus to Tahoe City couldn't really afford to come here, which is too bad,” Walther said. “I know I love the fact that there are choices available, though.”
