Help bring Sugar Pines backHelp bring Sugar Pines back

On Sunday Aug. 9, Friends and Supporters of the Sugar Pine Foundation will host a BBQ with live music from noon to 4 p.m. at Commons Beach in Tahoe City, to raise public awareness about the threat to the majestic Sugar Pines of the Tahoe Basin. They are currently being devastated with a non-native fungus called White Pine Blister Rust. Most of the Sugar Pines are infected and dying.

Since 2004 the Sugar Pine Foundation has been conducting genetic testing on Sugar Pines to find those resistant to the fungus. When these trees are identified, their cones are collected and their seeds harvested. Rust resistant seedlings are planted, restoring healthy Sugar Pines back to the Basin's forests.

The Sugar Pine Foundation needs members and volunteers to help to collect cones. Members of the Sugar Pine Foundation will be available on Sunday to provide information. Join the fight to save the Sugar Pines. Contact Bill O'Connor, Sugar Pine Foundation at 525-7476 or visit www.sugarpinefoundation.org
