SQUAW VALLEY USA — Jason Bryant, 36, of Elkin, N.C., captured first place in the 29th Squaw Valley Mountain Run on Saturday, edging Truckee's Peter Fain by less than a half-minute with a time of 31 minutes, 13 seconds.
Fain, a regular top finisher in Tahoe-area running events, posted a runner-up time of 31:41. Mike Sunseri of Incline Village rounded out the top three in 33:05, and was followed by Bill Raitter (33:16) and Jeff Moreland (33:56), both of Reno, and Piers Stockwell of Tahoe City, who placed sixth in 34:01.
Caitlin Smith, 28, of Oakland finished first among women and 14th overall with a time of 34:57, while 22-year-old Chelsea Holmes of Truckee took second in the women's field and 25th overall in 37:57. Pat Matava of Soda Springs took third among women in 39:13 and was followed by Truckee's Gretchen Brugman (39:33) and Julie Young (39:40).
More than 500 participants lined up for the 9 a.m. start at the base of Squaw Valley, where they faced a 2,000-vertical-foot climb in 3.6 miles to High Camp, at 8,200 feet in elevation. Of the 511 starters, 476 finished, according to the results.
None of the finishers was older than Del Wichelman of Oakland, who at age 86 completed the course in 421st place with a time of 1 hour, 24 minutes, 28 seconds. Wichelman maintained a slow jog all the way to the top, where he said he felt like running even farther.
Truckee's Barney Jones, at 79, was the second-oldest competitor. He finished 402nd in just over 1 hour, 18 minutes.
In other top local finishes, Incline triathlete Ross McMahan took 10th place overall with a time of 34:37, Truckee's Paul Sweeney was 15th in 35:27, Martin Benes of Soda Springs was 16th (35:38), Russell Kennedy of Truckee 18th (36:18), and Glen Jobe of Sierraville rounding out the top 20 in 36:38.
