TRUCKEE, Calif. — The last of Truckee Donner Public Utility District's workshops on water rates is Wednesday night.
Following state law, the utility district is installing new water meters and planning a new metered rate for Truckee customers. The state mandate requires the district have a billing plan by 2010 and implement it by 2011 for existing meters, and the plan is to have all residential customers on meters by 2012.
At the last workshop June 3, the public expressed a preference for an inclining rate structure for residential customers (water prices increase as use increases), and a flat rate for commercial customers, said Steven Poncelet, public information and conservation manager for the district.
“It was almost surprising the number of people happy and supporting these new rates,” Poncelet said.
At Wednesday's meeting, following the public input and board guidance, Poncelet expects the discussion to refine the details of the new rate structures.
“This is really the last open workshop to work on setting the new rates,” Poncelet said.
There will likely be another three or four months of public process after the workshop, he said, but the district will work off the set preferences defined at the workshops.
