A gorgeous picture of the east shore of Lake Tahoe graces the cover of the August edition of “Sunset Magazine.” The author of the article, Shana Mahaffey, reminisces about her childhood years at “the big red house off State 89, just a two-minute bike ride from Tahoe Park Beach.”
She recalls, as a little girl, bike riding to the beach every morning, jumping into the lake, “limbs flailing, into the frigid grip of the deep-blue water ... We closed our eyes and dunked under, ignoring the brain freeze as we swam back to shore, eager to climb the pier and jump again, and again, and again.”
She also used to bike, hike, kayak, raft, horseback ride, star gaze, and “catch crawdads by hooking bits of raw bacon on a line” ... all of which kids and adults still do today!
Buy or borrow a copy of “Sunset” and read Shana's article. It will remind you of the special opportunities we have living in nature's special playground.
Reminiscing ... Like Shana, one of the things that most human beings like to do is reminisce about the past. The joys of childhood, the special places we have been, the special people we have met, the favorite moments, successes, love, excitement — all that is perfect to our past. This is what drives us to seek experiences as exciting or even more exciting now and into the future.
Over the three or so years that we have written this column, we have really enjoyed receiving calls and e-mails from our “question of the week” responders. I have established some wonderful new acquaintances, and I love getting into conversations reminiscing about the past. It is fun to talk to others who have shared in the same life experiences. It truly is a small world.
We would like all of our readers to think back to memorable moments of their time here in the Truckee/Tahoe area. If you are inclined to share, we would love to receive an email with a paragraph or two that we could share with other readers. Then, hopefully, we would get reflections of that event from others and share those.
Here's a simple example to get started with: In the late 70s, I was asked once to substitute for the Tahoe City Firemen's fast pitch softball team. We played “Pete 'n Peter's,” and during the game I successfully struck out three times. I was never asked to play again. After the game we went out for a drink or two, or three (at Pete 'n Peter's of course). During a conversation I was told that their pitcher was from Hawaii (I think!), and he was hired to come over here during the summer to play softball and to do some construction work.
I remember feeling very humiliated and also somewhat bitter. I am guessing there may be a few other readers out there who remember those times when softball was the king of adult sports in the Tahoe/Truckee area. If you suffered the same fate as I, or if you have some recollections of those days of cut throat softball competition, drop us an e-mail and share your experience.
I hope we can get a flow toward “recollections of the past” and begin using this idea for future content of the column. Thanks!
Our thoughts, prayers, and best wishes go out to Mary De Lisle, our most avid reader and player for the question of the week. You may notice that she did not call in an answer this week. She has been under the weather lately but is under the care of “Dr. Tim” Lombard and her daughter Michelle and her family.
Mary is doing better, but for the moment, she cannot drive, and is confined to her home. “I am going stare crazy,” she said on Saturday when I called her. I am sure Mary would love to hear from her friends and neighbors. I encourage you to call her or drop her a “get well” card. I am sure a little prayer or two would also be appreciated.

Question of the week:
Last week's question ... We had 23 players who correctly identified “King's Castle” as the original name of the hotel/casino built in Incline Village which is now the Hyatt. Early bird winner Mike Livak wrote: “The Hyatt was opened in 1969 as King's Castle and the financing was provided by the Central States Teamster's Pension Fund. The story is that Buddy Hackett appeared live onstage nude for opening night (yikes-I guess they had a different idea of marketing and promotions in those days)!” Russ Rosewood and Wes Schimmelpfennig also correctly answered both the main question and bonus question.Other winners identifying “King's Castle” included Dean Litchfield, Lynn Flynn, Mark Brown, Patty Miracle, Gordy Kjer, Pam Ayers, Pat Northrop, Bonnie Jessee, Nancy Williamson, Irene Schwinning, Doug Gompertz, Beverly Burnham, Steve Marshman, Jerry Blakeley, Tim Hauserman, Jim Pulliam, John Smith, Barbara Northrop, Fred Hodgson, and Bill Mullins.
This week's question…..The Ponderosa Golf Course is Truckee's oldest golf course. Who originally built it? Call us at 550-5035 or e-mail us at nnicholls@dicksonrealty.com with your answer.
