Annual Kid's Day

Free community kids day event sponsored by the Truckee Donner Horsemen Association at the McIver Arena in Truckee, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 7. Free hot dogs, chips and drinks. Games, prizes and horse demonstrations. Call 582-5221.

Luau at the Beach Club Marina

Tahoe Donner Association Members present a Luau at the Beach Club Marina, with Music by Thom and the Tiki's, performances by traditional Hawaiian dancers, Saturday, Aug. 8, Tahoe Donner Beach Club Marina, Donner Lake at 6 p.m. Hawaiian dinner included, cocktails will be available for purchase. Kids Art Saturdays

The Kids ART Saturdays for August are scheduled for Aug. 8 and Aug. 15 from noon to 2 p.m. at North Tahoe ARTS Corison Loft, 380 N. Lake Blvd. next to the fire station in Tahoe City. There is no cost materials are supplied, and parents are asked to stay. Artists volunteer their time. Call 581-2787.

Defensible space collection

Defensible Space Collection Day will be Aug. 8, beginning at 7:30 a.m. Homewood Ski Area South Lodge, Tahoe Ski Bowl Way and North Tahoe Regional Park. Bring your defensible space materials for a free drop off. We will take pine needles, cones, brush, trees. Please bring unchipped, bagged or unbagged material. Boys & Girls Club of NLT community sale

The Boys and Girls Club of North Lake Tahoe will hold the second annual Community Sale to benefit the club, Saturday, Aug. 8 at Northstar-at-Tahoe from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. New and gently used items, a raffle and children's art show. Butcher Boy of Reno will provide barbecue and refreshments. All proceeds go to the programs and services at the club. Travel the Heritage Trail

Touring Placer County's Heritage Trail is a chance to revisit the county's wild west pioneering days, with free access to 18 museums in locations near Interstate 80 from Roseville to Tahoe, Aug. 8 and 9 from 10 am. to 4 p.m. It's fun, it's local and it's free, showcasing history for visitors of all ages. Help bring Sugar Pines back

On Sunday Aug. 9, Friends and Supporters of the Sugar Pine Foundation will host a BBQ with live music from noon to 4 p.m. at Commons Beach in Tahoe City to raise public awareness about the threat to Sugar Pines of the Tahoe Basin. They are being devastated with a non-native fungus called White Pine Blister Rust. Most of the Sugar Pines are infected and dying.

Since 2004 the Sugar Pine Foundation has been conducting genetic testing on Sugar Pines to find those resistant to the fungus. When these trees are identified, their cones are collected and seeds harvested. Rust resistant seedlings are then planted. The Sugar Pine Foundation needs members and volunteers to collect cones. Outdoor Chapel celebration

On Aug. 9 at 9 a.m. the Chapel of the Transfiguration, aka Outdoor Chapel, will be celebrating its 100th anniversary. The chapel, constructed in 1909 of stone and timbers by the Watson family, is believed to be the oldest church in continuous use within the Lake Tahoe basin. Come join the celebration. There will be a Eucharistic service consecrated by Barry Beisner, Episcopal Bishop of Northern California, followed by an outdoor reception. Members and guests are encouraged to wear 1909 attire, and decorative hats will be available for all.

League of Women Voters

League of Women Voters meeting for the new Truckee/North Tahoe chapter will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 11 at 5:30 p.m., at the Truckee/Donner PUD conference room. The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization which encourages active participation in government and influences public policy through education and advocacy. The League of Women Voters, established in 1920, is one of our nation's most respected grassroots organizations. It is open to all citizens of voting age — men and women. Visit www.lwv.org. Art and Soule

Lake Tahoe's former longtime resident Christine Siverts shows through October at the Soule Domain, 9983 Cove Ave., Kings Beach. Although Christine has opted for less populated pastures she has a connection to her home of more than 25 years from Squaw and Truckee to Tahoe Vista. Tahoe remains an influence in her paintings and friendships.

Christine has a UC degree specializing in painting and drawing. Her style ranges here from the wisp of a sketch to intense landscape projects. The current collection of abstract landscapes and snippets of light flora and fauna. Visit www.sivertsoriginals.biz.

North Tahoe Arts announcements

Be part of Raising Monet, a sizzling art swap. Aug. 15 is the deadline to donate your artwork to North Tahoe Arts. Bring your work – new, gently used, original or previously owned – to North Tahoe Arts, 380 North Lake Blvd., Tahoe City and receive a tax-donation receipt. We welcome donations of painting, posters, photography, sculpture, ceramics, woodwork to Raising Monet, the fifth annual sale and silent auction.

Attend the opening reception and sale at North Tahoe Arts, Sept. 4. Sept. 5 - 21, place your bids on items remaining in the silent auction, or pay the “take-it-home price.” Call 581-2787. All proceeds benefit North Tahoe Arts, the non-profit responsible for ARTour, ARTisan Shop, ART in Public Places, Tahoe Plein Air, YouthART Camp, and monthly exhibits.

Joint Chamber of Commerce mixer

The North Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce and the Truckee Donner Chamber of Commerce will offer a joint, pirate-themed mixer Wednesday, Aug. 12, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Village at Northstar in Truckee.

In keeping with years past, attendees will get caught up in the fun and offered grub and grog, fine rum tastin' and a treasure hunt, along with a raffle. This event is free and open to both chamber members and non-members.

KidZone family camp

This summer, the KidZone Museum in Truckee will offer a family camp and several kids' camps. Family Camp will take place Aug. 14 to 16, at the University of California, Berkeley facility Sagehen Creek Field Station. Activities will include: hiking, bugology, fishology, watersheds, camping, making friends, arts and yummy foods. Micheal Ross, guest educator, has the amazing gift of being able to teach natural history to adults and young children. KidZone Family Camp is open to children of all ages, with their parents.
