Sierra Club at Donner Summit celebrates two historic anniversaries

Campfires, s'mores and music at Clair Tappaan lodge

Donner Summit in the Sierra Nevada will celebrate two important Sierra Club anniversaries Aug. 14-16: Clair Tappaan Lodge, named after a Los Angeles judge and Sierra Club president, is 75 years old, and Hutchinson Lodge, only a few minutes walk away is 85. Both buildings are owned by the Sierra Club, and are important milestones in the history of the nation's oldest and largest environmental organization.

Clair Tappaan Lodge, located at 19940 Donner Pass Road in Soda Springs/Norden, will be the main site with hikes, bird walks, fly fishing and solar oven demonstrations, painting and watercolor techniques, knitting, music, music and more music to commemorate the two anniversaries.

The full fee of $195 for adults will include all meals (Friday dinner to Sunday lunch), overnight lodging Friday and Saturday nights and all activities. There are also fees for one-day attendance. For more information, visit http://motherlode.sierraclub.org/sierranevada/gala.html.

Attending the gala will be a descendant of the Hutchinson brothers and Milton Hildebrand, 91-years-old, who at age 17 was one of the builders of Clair Tappaan Lodge. Sierra Club President Allison Chin is flying in from the east coast and will be a keynote speaker during the Saturday night program.

The public is encouraged to attend. Additional donations received for the event will help underwrite schools and other groups to bring students to the Sierra Club at Donner Summit for environmental education.

Clair Tappaan Lodge is located at 7,000 feet in the Sierra Nevada. For information, directions or to make a reservation call (800) 679-6775 or 426-3632. Visit the Web site at http://ctl.sierraclub.org or send e-mail to ctl@sierraclub.org.
