Tahoe National Forest handcrew among 125 'Hotshots'

TRUCKEE, Calif. — Tahoe National Forest's handcrew how holds the elite title of Hotshots.

The 21-member team of firefighters recently went through two days of drills simulating fire-line situations to earn the new status. They join 125 other Hotshot crews throughout the country.

“The certification process is challenging and it can take years to prepare for,” said Lance Noxon, eastzone fire management officer for the Forest Service, in a press release. “Standards for hotshot crews are very high.”

Other Hotshot crews in the area include the Tahoe Hotshots stationed in Camptonville and the American River Hotshots stationed in Foresthill.

Hotshot crews are trained and equipped to work in remote areas for long periods of time with little support, according to the press release.

During the fire season they travel throughout the country.
