Less than one year after joining the Truckee Tahoe Medical Group (TTMG), Dr. Erin Winter has gained a strong foothold in the community, connecting with patients and families on a personal and professional level.
TTMG is now made up of seven physicians and three nurse practitioners and provides a wide range of health care to the community including sports medicine, preventative and pediatric care. Dr. Winter is the first new doctor to join the group in four years.
Dr. Winter graduated from Georgetown Medical School and moved west to complete her internship and family practice residency at the University of Nevada, Reno. After finishing her training, she became a “traveling doctor,” taking locum tenens positions across the United States and in New Zealand. After traveling for a year, she was eager to join an established group of family physicians.
With her strong academic background and hands-on experience, Dr. Winter had many choices of where to settle. Her main goal was to work in a community-oriented family medicine group caring for families as a whole, with emphasis on preventative medicine. “I was attracted to TTMG because of its excellent reputation and its camaraderie,” she explains. “Patients frequently comment that the care received at TTMG rivals that of some of the most prestigious medical groups like Kaiser, Stanford and the UC system.”
Dr. Winter practices full-spectrum family medicine, from newborns to the elderly. She sees healthy patients for preventative care, treats acute illnesses and oversees patients who see several specialists and require careful management of medications and multiple medical issues. “A family doctor has the privilege of seeing patients in many aspects of their lives and health,” says Dr. Winter. “This makes family doctors most qualified to figure out what is really going on, whether it be a simple sinus infection or an initial diagnosis of cancer.”
Taking care of young families is one of Dr. Winter's favorite parts of the job. “It's important to start education early, to encourage healthy behavior and help prevent the common diseases of hypertension, high cholesterol and heart disease,” she explains.
“Erin was highly recommended to us not only as a smart and talented doctor, but also as a kind, caring, genuine person. She's exceeded all expectations. The Truckee Tahoe community and TTMG are lucky and honored to have her join the medical staff,” says Dr. Reini Jensen.
“She is a wonderful addition to our group because of her enthusiasm,” says Carol Lindsey, a Registered Nurse and Family Nurse Practitioner with TTMG. “She really cares and she's a great communicator and a great listener, particularly with adolescent and young adults. When her patient has a problem, she goes out of her way to research it.”
Dr. Winter loves spending time outdoors, mountain biking, hiking, golfing and skiing.
She enjoys emergency, urgent care and wilderness medicine and participates in the Annual UNR Wilderness Medicine Conference. Dr. Winter lectures on Wilderness Medicine and Safety at the conference, which is held in the backcountry at the Lost Trail Lodge in Truckee. This year she led a group of medical students, helping them fashion rescue sleds out of their ski equipment, use their poles for traction and race 100 feet to a finish line while keeping the “injured patient” as stable and comfortable as possible. “It's a great learning and team-building experience for the local doctors, mid-levels and students who participate,” she says.
Being part of a community that values its health and cares about being active is one of the main reasons Dr. Winter moved to Truckee. “The emphasis on outdoor recreation in the Truckee and Lake Tahoe area translates into improved health for doctors and patients alike.”
As personable as she is professional, Dr. Winter participates in community programs and enjoys getting her hands dirty. She works night shifts in the emergency room and volunteers for Boy Scout physicals. She was recently inducted into the Truckee Rotary and picked up trash along Glenshire Drive on Truckee Day as one of her first community service projects.
Dr. Winter's experience as a chief resident at UNR will be very useful as TTMG begins teaching UC Davis medical students. “My first year with TTMG exceeded my expectations. All of the partners and staff have gone above and beyond to make me feel welcome,” says Dr. Winter. “I have enjoyed getting to know my patients and their families. I have even seen some of my staff and their families, and I am honored to be trusted in that role.”
The Tahoe City office is open seven days a week during the summer and the Truckee office is open Monday through Saturday. The Squaw Valley and Northstar offices are open seven days a week during the winter season. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Winter or any TTMG clinician, please call 581-8864.
