Thomas D. Hobday and Bob Schapper
TRUCKEE/TAHOE — Tahoe Forest Health System named Thomas D. Hobday as Founding Director of the newly-formed Tahoe Institute for Rural Health Research at an Aug. 7 event.
The Tahoe Institute for Rural Health Research is a unique partnership with the University of California, Davis Center for Biophotonics, a program affiliated with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories among others.
“Tom's passion for advancing the delivery of quality health care in this community is unsurpassed,” said Bob Schapper, CEO of Tahoe Forest. “Recognizing Tom as a Founding Director of the Institute really speaks to his leadership and innovative approach to solving rural health issues. We are very lucky to have someone of Tom's caliber working on our behalf.”
Prior to moving to Truckee with his wife Pamela Hurt Hobday, Tom was the co-owner and chairman of the board of Sacramento Valley Insurance, one of the largest insurance brokerages in Northern California. After retiring from the insurance business in 1995, he joined UC Davis Health System as Assistant Dean of the Medical School and Assistant Director of the UC Davis Medical Center. His positions included management of the Health Sciences Advancement Department and the Public Affairs Department.
“There are no other research institutions like the Tahoe Institute for Rural Health Research in the country,” Hobday said. “There are seven other rural healthcare institutions that we know of, none of those are focused on technical solutions for problems developed in rural or remote communities.”
The Aug. 7 ceremony honoring Hobday noted he was recognized for “Transformational leadership on behalf of Tahoe Forest Health System,” and named him the “Founding Director of the Tahoe Institute for Rural Health Research.”
