DOLLAR HILL — The North Tahoe boys and girls soccer teams both played Sparks to a tie in their Northern 3A Sierra League openers Tuesday.
The Laker boys (4-3-2 overall, 4-0-1 against the 3A) tied 0-0, while the Laker girls (5-1-1) followed with a 1-1 tie against the visiting Railroaders.
“They have a good team,” North Tahoe boys head coach Beto Alcaraz said of Sparks. “They're fast and touch the ball well.”
Alcaraz said he was disappointed with his team's performance, as the Railroaders fired off about twice as many shots on goal as the Lakers.
If it weren't for the outstanding play from junior striker Freddy Ramirez, who filled in at goalie, Alcaraz said the Railroaders likely would have found the back of the net for the win.
“We didn't come out ready to play,” Alcaraz said, adding that Ramirez stood out as the best player on the field. “We didn't bring our A-game. We dodged a bullet, really.”
The tie came after North Tahoe's boys defeated Fernley last Thursday. In that game Ramirez led the Lakers with two goals, while junior Zander Blackmon scored one goal.
Like Alcaraz, Laker girls head coach Jon Rockwood also was frustrated with Tuesday's result against Sparks, mainly because his team dominated the game for 75 minutes only to settle for the tie against a Sierra League opponent.
“The girls hustled throughout and easily maintained position and control of the game,” he said. “… We clearly need to work on finishing and offensive decision-making.
North Tahoe junior Kelley Holman provided an offensive highlight in the 20th minute when she blasted a shot into the goal from 30 yards out, avoiding a congested 18-yard box to put the Lakers on top, 1-0.
Sparks scored the tying goal in the 60th minute.
