A number of local athletes participated in the XTERRA USA Championship in Ogden, Utah, this past Saturday, with Genevieve Evans of Carnelian Bay, Jim Meskimen of Truckee and John Donovan of Incline Village all capturing national championships in their divisions.
The triathlon, formerly held in Incline Village, took place in the Wasatch Range and included a 1-mile swim in Pineview Reservoir, followed by a 30-kilometer mountain bike leg and a 10-kilometer run. Athletes qualified through a season-long points system.
Nicolas “Nico” Lebrun chased down defending champ Conrad Stoltz during the last quarter of the run, finishing in 2 hours, 21 minutes and 57 seconds, while Melanie McQuaid (2:48:37) held off a hard-charging Shonny Vanlandingham to win the men's and women's pro titles.
Donovan won his men's 20-24 division and took 29th place overall with a time of 2 hours, 52 minutes and 13 seconds.
Evans finished first in the women's 35-39 division (103rd overall) with a time of 3 hours, 18 minutes and 24 seconds, while Meskimen took first in his 65-69 division in 4 hours, 19 minutes and 41 seconds.
In other local results, Eric Ronning of Incline Village finished 10th in his competitive 40-44 division and 82nd overall in 3:09:59, Robert Kronkhyte of Squaw Valley was eighth in the 50-54 division and 137th overall in 3:30:45, and Matt Yarbrough of Truckee was 21st in the 30-34 division and 172nd overall in 3:44:19.
Women's pro Emma Garrard, a former Truckee resident who recently moved to Utah, placed 11th overall among women and 73rd overall with a time of 3:06:13. Garrard placed eighth in the U.S. Pro Series standings.
