Mountain bike ‘Race for Tara' benefit
On Oct. 10 and 11, Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort will host the 3rd Annual 'Race for Tara,' a benefit race weekend that is open to downhill mountain bike competitors of all abilities and will raise funds for the Tara Llanes Road to Recovery Fund and the Christopher Reeve Foundation to find a cure for spinal cord injury. The event will kick off with practice Oct. 10 and a party at sundown in the Village at Northstar featuring a DJ, video screening, raffle and beer. The race begins at 11 a.m. on Oct. 11 with sport and beginner, 4-wheel, and professional and expert divisions competing on a 4-mile course with 1,800 feet of descent beginning at the resort's summit and ending at mid-mountain. Donations to participate are $35 for beginner, sport and expert divisions, and $40 for semi-pro and pro classes. Northstar will offer discounted lift tickets for $25 to registered riders. Medals will be awarded to the top three finishers in each division, and GIANT Bicycles is sponsoring a $2,500 Pro prize purse.
TGR film premier
Teton Gravity Research's new ski and snowboard film, “Session,” will premier at FiftyFifty Brewing Company in Truckee on Oct. 10. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; the film starts at 7:30, with an after-party to follow. Paid entry includes a free lift ticket to Northstar-at-Tahoe or Sierra-at-Tahoe resorts. Adult drop-in basketball
The Truckee-Donner Recreation & Park District offers adult drop-in basketball for $3 per player Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 11 a.m-1 p.m. at the Veterans Building in downtown Truckee. There will also be drop-in at Alder Creek Middle School on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. on Sept. 8, 15, 17, 22 and 24. The open gyms are a good way to get ready for the winter basketball league, which starts Sept. 29. For more information contact the TDRPD at 582-7720.

Northstar Resort willl offer a number of youth ski and snowboard team programs for the coming winter, including the Pioneer Program for kids ages 4-12, a development race team program for those ages 5-18 and competitive race team programs for those ages 9-19. All include an Unlimited Double Whammy season pass at Northstar and Sierra-at-Tahoe, as well as training from Todd Kelly and Chris Hargrave. More than 300 top student-athletes from schools across the country will compete in a range of downhill and endurance events while vying for team and individual titles.
