Tahoe crime update: Deputies locate missing Bridgetender safe

LAKE TAHOE — Deputies have located the second of two safes stolen in August from a Tahoe City restaurant.

It was found Tuesday off a U.S. Forest Service road on Tahoe's West Shore, said Sgt. John Giovannini of the Placer County Sheriff's Department.

The find comes less than two weeks after deputies searched the home of Tahoma resident Cody Pohl and located the first safe in his backyard.

Giovannini said Pohl, arrested Sept. 23 for stealing five newspaper boxes, hasn't been charged in the Bridgetender thefts, but that investigation is “progressing nicely.”

The sheriff's department has declined to say how much cash each safe contained.

Pohl remains jailed at Placer County Jail in Auburn for suspected theft of the newspaper boxes. His bail is at $10,000, and he faces six felony charges.

Pohl will return to Tahoe City for a for a 10 a.m. preliminary hearing Tuesday in Placer County Superior Court.

Incline stabbing

Investigators in Washoe County say they have no new information on the stabbing death of Charles Baymiller, a 73 year-old Incline Village man. Deputies found Baymiller dead from apparent stab wounds Monday night at his Lakeshore Boulevard home. His wife Mary Baymiller, 72, was found in the home, suffering from stab wounds. She was taken via Careflight to Renown Regional Medical Center.

Officials with the county sheriff said earlier this week they were waiting for Mary Baymiller to recover to find out information on the incident, which is believed to be an altercation between the two since there are no signs of other people in the home.

Tahoe pot bust

No trial dates have been set for the three local men arrested in connection with an illegal marijuana grow on federal land north of Olympic Valley.

Olympic Valley resident Steven Day, 48, and Tahoe City residents Christopher Egger, 23, and Matthew Steele, 28, were arrested Thursday, Oct. 1, for allegedly cultivating more than 200 marijuana plants, valued at an estimated $750,000.

The three bailed out of Placer County Jail at $5,000; they each face three felony charges — conspiracy to sell, possession of marijuana for sale and marijuana cultivation.
