Healthcare Reform and Compliance workshop

As part of it Chamber Education workshop series, the North Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the Healthcare Reform and Compliance workshop Friday, Oct. 23, 8:30 to 11 a.m., Tahoe City Golf Course, 251 N. Lake Blvd., Tahoe City.

This labor law update workshop will provide an overview of Federal COBRA Revisions under ARRA, New HIPAA Security/Privacy Standards and commonly missed federal provisions and upcoming year-end compliance deadlines. It will also include I-9 requirements and contractors' compliance with social security verification.

Registration is $10 per person and includes breakfast, for North Lake Tahoe Chamber of Commerce members and Sierra Human Resources Association members. Non-members pay $20 per person and also includes breakfast. To register call Kym Fabel 581-8764 or kym@puretahoenorth.com.

Tahoe Rim Trail's Hoots, Howls and Growls

Hike will follow the 1.2 mile interpretive trail in the Tahoe Meadows Saturday, Oct. 24. This program will go from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. and is for families with children ages 5 and up. The hike will not be strenuous, and will be broken up with games, stories and other hands-on activities. Please be prepared for the temperamental weather of the Tahoe Meadows as gloves, beanies, mittens, long underwear, warm socks and winter jackets may be necessary. Each person in your group should have a water bottle and flashlight. No dogs on this hike. The interpretive trail is designed to be a safe, comfortable experience for people over the age of five and people in wheelchairs. This trail is wide and all the way around the loop. Its high elevation level (8740 feet) can be a challenge. To register, contact the Tahoe Rim Trail Association at (775) 298-0012 or e-mail programs@tahoerimtrail.org.

Neuropathy Support Group meeting

Mary Sutton, PT, of Sierra Sports & Spine Therapy, Physical Therapy Clinic and Gym, will speak at the Neuropathy Support Group Meeting, Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1 p.m. All interested in neuropathy are welcome.

If your toes/feet or fingers/hands tingle, feel numb, freezing cold or burning hot or like you are wearing a glove or a sock or you have balance problems, you may have neuropathy. All ages are welcome, no reservation is needed. If extra information is needed, call Bev at (877) 622-6298.

World Water Issues Film Festival at SNC

From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28 view “Poisoned Waters (PBS special)” hosted by Michael Rosen, research hydrologist, USGS and Madonna Dunbar, Tahoe Water Suppliers Association. The event is at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences in Rooms 139 and 141. Staff from the Tahoe Water Suppliers Association will discuss local issues related to our own drinking water. How safe is our drinking water? What are the issues and actions you can take to protect our local drinking water source? Michael Rosen, research hydrologist with USGS, has been studying endocrine disrupters in Lake Mead, organic contaminants in tributary streams to Lake Tahoe, and the Truckee River to determine their effect on the aquatic ecosystem.

GOTR Halloween Fun Run

Participate in a non-competitive family-friendly run/walk where everyone is a winner. Runners, walkers, children and strollers welcome. No dogs please! Event festivities include music, food, great raffle and games. Halloween costumes are encouraged. Registration and pre-race festivities begin at 9 a.m.; run starts at 10 a.m. Pre-registration online is $20 per person through Oct. 30. Visit www.girlsontherunsierras.org. On race day, $25 per person. Race to be held at Truckee River View Sports Park, 12200 Joerger Drive, off Soaring Way.
