Truckee Elementary Pumpkin Patch a success

What a great time everyone had at this year's Pumpkin Patch at Truckee Elementary! We would like to say a big thank you to our tireless PTO volunteers and organizers who did an awesome job organizing this event.

We, the GATE class, have many people and businesses to thank as well for donating to our food booth. A big thank you to Travis Pribble with the Lions Club, who set up the food truck and he and TJ O'Brien took it down. They were awesome! Smokey's Kitchen, McDonalds, Ron Farrell of Wells Fargo Home Mortgage, and Starbucks contributed food and money to make our booth successful.

Of course, I couldn't do any of this without the wonderfully supportive parents. The unique learning that stimulates the minds of our children in Yosemite will stay with these kids forever. We've just made that possible.

I'm so thankful to live in a community that comes together for the benefit of our children. Year after year, Truckee is the place to be.

Sincerely,

Mardiece Patrick, GATE Coordinator, Truckee Elementary

To the North Lake Tahoe/Truckee Community

This past month, our family was devastated by the loss of our son, brother, husband and father, Seth Philip Joslin. Seth died on Labor Day, Sept. 7, 2009 at the age of 35. The purpose of this letter to the community is to express our gratitude for the outpouring of support from all of our friends, as well as to those whom we have never met, regarding our unfortunate situation. We want everyone to know that their support and contributions to our family have been instrumental in hastening our recovery effort. Folks have come to our aid in moving household goods, providing food for us during our grief, moral and emotional support, and expressing their love with phone calls, e-mails and personal visits. This has been a source of support that none of us have experienced in our lifetime, and has proven to be a very powerful and positive recovery tool. We are so grateful to all of you for everything that you have done for us.

The list of contributors and supporters is long, but we would like to acknowledge the extraordinary generosity and support of a few special people. Jake's on the Lake, Atomic Printing, Event Masters, Jim and Gail Bowman, Judy Luce, Gerald and Nancy Lambert, Sarah Williams, Joe Lanza and Justin Garcia at Lanzas Restaurant, Andy Habeger and the Habeger Family, Lane Lewis at the Old Brockway Golf Course and so many others. We are very fortunate to live in a community that is full of so many people who are willing to work so hard to provide such support in a time of grief. Our sincere thanks to all of you. We will never look at our community in the same way again. You have filled our hearts with gratitude and appreciation. We thank you so much.

At this point, words fall short of trying to express what all of you have done for us. Our focus now is on the children. They deserve to have their childhood. Therefore, we are doing our best to move forward, and center ourselves on the positive things in Seth's life that we can look back on, and rejoice in. When you see us out and about, please accept our sincere “hello” and our “thank you.” Your smile, hug and encouragement will always be welcome. Thank you again for all of your support. You are our extended family, and will remain so.

We will all miss Seth. We cannot bring him back. We must go forward. You are more than welcome to go forward with us.

Sincerely,

Toot and Lela Joslin, Rachel Josline and family, Isaac Joslin and family

Do not stand at my grave and weep

I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,

I am the diamond glints on the snow,

I am the sun on ripened grain,

I am the gentle Autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush,

I am the swift uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circled flight.

I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry,

I am not there: I did not die.

Seth will live in our hearts forever.

More than heart-felt thank yours can express

I just received my letter of notice that Dr. Mike Ryan, DVM, has sold his practice. For once, the cat has got my tongue because words alone cannot express the appreciation and gratitude for the years of medical attention, treatment and care of the animals that Dr. Ryan has given us.

My tears are not of sadness, but of joy that you, Dr. Ryan, are able to successfully enter into a semi-retired lifestyle. Just remember, Truckee remains a small town who has its Big Heroes, and you are one of mine!

Fondly,

Sherry da Roza and family

Ten years of tutoring

Volunteerism is a big thing here in Truckee. This is exemplified by Joanne Gray, who has tutored adult students in reading, writing and English-as-a-Second Language for 10 years in Nevada County (Truckee Library's Literacy Service). Joanne has tutored a number of students during the 10-year period, usually meeting with them weekly, one-on-one to help them achieve goals they have set for self-improvement. This is volunteerism up close and personal with life-changing results. Our thanks to Joanne for her commitment to her students, and the literacy program. Tutors like Joanne are the heart of our program.

Alan Archer, Literacy Coordinator Nevada County Library

Rolann Aronson Literacy Specialist, Truckee Library
