North Tahoe soccer: Boys shut out Fernley, move on to regional semifinal

Junior Israel Ramirez scored two goals to help lead the Laker boys past host Fernley, 4-0, in the opening round of the Northern 3A Regional Tournament on Tuesday.

“We played very well,” said North Tahoe head coach Beto Alcaraz, whose Lakers are seeded fourth out of the Sierra League. “It was almost a perfect game. We moved the ball well and passed well. The boys were right on track.”

Omar Arellano and Griffin Granger scored a goal apiece to round out the scoring for the Lakers; Freddy Ramirez preserved the shutout at goalie.

Fernley was the top-seeded team out of the Humboldt League, which did not advance a single team to the semifinal round.

Instead, all four teams from the Sierra League — traditionally the much stronger division — will do battle in the semifinals Friday, when the tournament moves to Churchill County High School (Fallon) for the final two days.

The Lakers will face No. 2 Sierra League seed Sparks their a semifinal Friday at noon, while top-seeded Incline and third-seeded Truckee meet in the other semifinal at 2 p.m. North Tahoe played Sparks to a 1-1 tie on Sept. 22, while the Railroaders won the second regular-season meeting on Oct. 10.

The boys' regional championship is scheduled for Saturday at noon, and the third-place game at 10 a.m. The top three teams qualify for the state championship.
