TRUCKEE, Calif. — People do things a little differently in Truckee.
Case in point — town council tradition holds that each member takes a yearly turn as mayor, rather than someone being elected to the position. On Thursday, town council members will vote to pick next year's first and second in command, effectively replacing current Mayor Mark Brown.
“I have loved it,” said Brown about his mayoral tenure. “It's been a great learning process in getting more involved in the community.”
He said traditionally the vice mayor, in this case Carolyn Wallace Dee, is picked as the new mayor.
“I think it's a wonderful method — it gives people more time to be involved on a deeper level,” Brown said.
Town Clerk Judy Price said it isn't really an unusual arrangement, as it's done in other towns across the country.
“In a strong mayor form, they have veto power like a governor — they didn't want someone on the council to have more power than the others,” Price said. “It gives all the council members the opportunity to take that role and run the meetings.”
Town council will select its mayor and vice mayor at the Thursday, Dec. 3, town council meeting starting at 6 p.m. at town hall at 10183 Truckee Airport Road.
