SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Tahoe agencies are interested in hearing comments about how to improve public transportation in the Tahoe basin.
A public comment period is open on the topic through Jan. 15. The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and South Tahoe Area Transit Authority will host two transit forums before the deadline.
The first forum will begin at 3 p.m. Dec. 16 in the El Dorado County Library at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd. BlueGO Routes 50, 52, 55 along with BlueGO OnCall provide service to the workshop location.
“Public transportation is a huge challenge in Lake Tahoe,” said TRPA and BlueGo Spokesman Dennis Oliver. “We have a number of different demographics here.”
For example, South Lake Tahoe has about half of the percentage of riders under the age of 18 compared to areas with a similar areas, Oliver said.
In addition, the agencies want to improve service to riders commuting for Carson City, Minden and Gardnerville.
A large target for the agencies is the 3 million visitors who come to the Tahoe basin each year.
“We'd like for more of them to drive into the basin and leave their car a their lodging property and use public transportation,” Oliver said.
These challenges also come with a shortage of funding, Oliver said.
About 10 percent of BlueGo's budget, or about $400,000 was cut this year, Oliver said.
