TRUCKEE — The Wolverines started with a hot shooting touch and never cooled off Monday night to eventually pull away from a pesky Portola squad, 89-74.

“We actually were putting some points up,” said Truckee head coach Mike Hoehn, whose Wolverines set a new season-high by scoring 89. “We didn't play much defense, but we put points up.”

Truckee improved to 3-2 overall with the nonleague win while Portola (Calif.) fell to 3-5.

Despite the home team's ability to put points on the board, the Tigers kept the score close until the end of the third quarter with an efficient offense of their own. They also took advantage of defensive lapses and Truckee fouls, which put Portola in the bonus and at the free-throw line for much of the contest.

“Every time we started to pull away a little bit, we let up defensively and they got right back in it,” Hoehn said. “But at least we were able to keep our offense rolling.”

Portola, which trailed 17-14 after the opening quarter, scored 27 points to Truckee's 24 in the second quarter to send the game to halftime tied at 41. The Wolverines came out on fire after the break, posting 28 points in the third to take a 69-60 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Tigers twice cut the lead to six points in the final quarter before senior guard Matt Mehan drained a 3-point dagger to extend Truckee's lead to 81-72 with 3:22 left on the clock. The Wolverines hit six of 10 free throws the final 3 minutes to build a comfortable margin.

Mehan set the pace offensively for the Wolverines, connecting on a couple of early 3-pointers and slashing layups en route to a team-high 25 points. Mehan wasn't the only Wolverine with a crisp shot, as junior post player Ben Bolton tallied 16 points, and Tyler Ferris and Tony Rodriguez each contributed 14 points to the well-balanced attack.

Portola senior guard Cliff Robinson led all scorers with 27 points.

Besides shooting the ball well from the perimeter, Truckee players regularly drove to the hoop to pick up points in the paint and draw fouls on Portola's bigs. Once at the line, they capitalized, making 21 of 29 free throws in the game.

“That was definitely our highest point total (of the season),” Bolton said, “but we could have done better on our defense and rebounding. ... We'll need to pick it up for league after Christmas break.”
