Holiday Food and Clothing Project
Volunteers are needed 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 18, at North Tahoe Event Center to organize and display winter clothing and children's books. From 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, volunteers are needed to help with the distribution. To make donations: Checks should be payable to NTHC Holiday Food and Clothing Project. Mail to: Holiday Food and Clothing Project, North Tahoe Hebrew Congregation, P.O. Box 201, Tahoe Vista, CA 96148. To donate winter clothing and children's books, drop the items in the donation barrels in the North Tahoe Hebrew Congregation Temple lobby at 7000 Latone Blvd. in Tahoe Vista.

Any individuals or families that would like to sign up to receive food can fill out a simple application at PDQ Market in Tahoma, Sunnyside Market, Baptist Church in Tahoe City, Tahoe Women's Services, Family Resource Center, Boys and Girls Club or the Event Center in Kings Beach. Solve the mystery of the dying fish
From 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 30, at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences on the Sierra Nevada College Campus, fourth through sixth grade students are invited to conduct scientific experiments and figure out which suspect is responsible for poisoning water and wildlife. Through hands-on activities, students will learn about environmental issues facing Lake Tahoe such as water clarity, sediment run off, acid rain, wildlife populations, oil pollution, water pollution and environmental solutions. Youth Science Institute accepting applicants
High school students interested in science can apply for the Youth Science Institute program by Dec. 30. This after-school program will be offered from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday evenings at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences on the Sierra Nevada College campus, Jan. 27 through May 26. Students grades nine through 11 need a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a commitment to the program. Tuition is $250. Partial and full scholarships available. The deadline for applications is Dec. 30. Spiritual Adventure in the Snow booksigning
“Spiritual Adventures in the Snow: Skiing and Snowboarding as Renewal for your Soul” is a fun and adventurous look at the deeply profound experience, the rhythms of snow sports as renewal for mind, body and spirit. Tahoe locals who are featured in the book include: Paul Arthur (author of the foreword; Squaw Valley Junior Olympic coach to Tamara McKinney and first coach to Shane McConkey), Tina Basich (U.S. Snowboarding champion and founder of Boarding for Breast Cancer), Evan Strong (adaptive snowboarder and two-time national superpipe champion), Alex Heyman (training coordinator for the Mountain Sports Learning Center at Sugar Bowl), and Bill Seline (local mountain guide, avalanche instructor and paramedic) as well as several local ski resorts. Kristin Krone (Olympic skier and owner of Wild Cherries in Truckee) offers an endorsement on the cover.

The Carmel Gallery is pleased to host a reception for sculptor Milton Heifetz on Sunday, Dec. 27 from 4 to 6 p.m. Dr. Heifetz's bronze and marble sculptures are inspired by the graceful forms and gestures of birds. Milton David Heifetz is the former Chairman of the Dept. of Neurosurgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where he practiced medicine for 40 years. He has served as a visiting professor of neurosurgery and of ethics and at Harvard University Medical School, a visiting scholar of ethics at Oxford University, and an adjunct lecturer at Boston College Law School. Dr. Heifetz began sculpting in 1945. His bronze and marble sculptures can be found in many private collections.
