'Harvest of the Month' will return to Tahoe Truckee Unified School District

Local elementary students will taste and explore fresh fruits and vegetables in the classroom as the Harvest of the Month Program begins its third cycle this school year. The Harvest of the Month Program is a fun, engaging, and successful nutrition education program that gets kids excited about fruits and vegetables.

In the age of fast food, prepackaged processed meals, and rising obesity rates it is important we help children gain an appreciation for whole foods and good nutrition. It is truly refreshing to see children asking for more fruits and vegetables. We rarely have leftovers from our tastings and teachers and volunteers are amazed by the children's enthusiasm and interest.

This year we will taste tomatoes, bell peppers, Satsuma mandarins, beets, dried fruits and salad greens and explore garlic, onion and fresh herbs.

We have learned exploring and tasting fruits and vegetables is not only a great way to teach about nutrition, but also often results in children trying new foods and discovering they may even like them.

If you get a warm feeling just thinking about kids enjoying fruits and vegetables, we can use your help! You can support the Harvest of the Month program with your time, a monetary donation, or both.

Volunteer with a classroom by committing about 30 minutes a month for seven months (October through May). Or, sponsor a class for the entire school year for $125, although any amount that you can donate is helpful. Share your interest in good nutrition and helps kids gain an appreciation for fresh and healthy foods by supporting the Harvest of the Month Program!
