In “Nevada County, CA an Outsourcing Proposal Stirs Controversy,” The Library Journal reviews the current debate about outsourcing the management of Nevada County Public Libraries to a for-profit company based in Maryland. Ruth Hall from the Friends of the Truckee Library and Truckee Town Councilman Richard Anderson – who sat on separate advisory committees which both recommended against outsourcing – are both quoted in the article.

Jeff Ackerman, editor/publisher of Grass Valley's The Union newspaper, is quoted as stating, “…I doubt that any elected official who hopes to get re-elected (and two of them recently announced they will be seeking new terms next year) will vote to privatize our public libraries.“

Wine tasting at Piper's Patisserie

Girls Scouts make life sweeter for service overseas

Girl Scout cookie season is underway. Local Girl Scouts will continue last year's fundraising drive to send cookies overseas to local service men and women. Last year family and friends registered a total of 18 men and women who were serving to receive cookies. The Girl Scouts sent each close to 100 boxes to share with their respective units. Needless to say, they were overjoyed and their spirits were lifted. If you know someone in the community who is, or will be, serving overseas in the spring of 2010, or if you would like to help with a donation, please contact Bonnie Dodge, Sierra Tahoe Service Unit Product Manager, at 583-3946. Free tax preparation

The free AARP Tax Aide Program will be offered in Truckee, targeting middle and low income tax payers, especially seniors 60 years plus, at the Family Resource Center of Truckee and Sierra Senior Services. Sessions will be Feb. 20, 26; March 12 and 27; April 7 and 10. Each appointment will take 45 minutes. Call the Family Resource Center of Truckee at 587-2513. Seniors who would like taxes prepared at the Sierra Senior Services, please call 550-7600. Appointments will be scheduled for Feb. 16; March 2, 16 and 30; April 13. Clients need to bring the following items: Last year's tax return, W-2s and 1099s, Social Security and brokerage statements, Social Security card or ITIN number, picture ID and birth certificate for dependents if ITIN's are needed.
