TRUCKEE/TAHOE, Calif. — Truckee and North Tahoe will be well-represented in the 2010 Sertoma Classic all-star football game Friday night in Reno.
Seven just-graduated seniors from Truckee High School and one from North Tahoe were invited to be on the game's Silver team, which is coached by Truckee's Bob Shaffer. The five Truckee athletes participating include: Jordan Deiro (RB/S), Vince Shaffer (WR/DB), Luis Aguilar (LB), Orlando Serna (LB) and Tanner Keese (OL). Jackson Weed, who is injured, will not play, Shaffer said. Ryan Zusy also was invited to play, but he has chosen not to, Shaffer said.
"All of (the kids) are doing well and representing Truckee high School in the regular fashion we expect," Shaffer said.
Recently graduated North Tahoe High School senior Parker Laughlin will play defensive end and fullback for the Silver team.
The Sertoma Classic — a fundraiser sponsored by the Sparks Sertoma Club — is a high school football all-star game which first began 1981. Teams are selected among about 30 Nevada high schools, as well as California schools at Lake Tahoe and Truckee, from the 2A, 3A and 4A. The teams this year have 45-player rosters.
Beside North Tahoe and Truckee, the Silver team consists of players from Spanish Springs, Pershing County (Lovelock), Douglas, Reed, Hug, Whittell, North Valleys, Elko, Wooster, Damonte Ranch and South Tahoe.
The Blue team — coached by Blair Roman of Carson High School — consists of players from Carson, Fernley, Galena, Bishop Manogue, Yerington, Fallon, Reno, Dayton, Silver Stage, Spring Creek, Sparks and Battle Mountain.
