The Lakers went 1-2 in the season-opening Howell Memorial Tournament at Galena this past weekend, with both losses coming against 4A programs.
“The Galena tournament was a huge success for us,” said North Tahoe head coach Jon Rockwood. “We finished 1-2 but played well against much larger schools.”
North Tahoe started the annual tournament with a 3-1 loss to Reed, then followed with a 3-2 win against Fernley and a 2-0 loss to Spanish Springs.
“The girls came out strong and played well through the midfield,” Rockwood said of the Reed game. “We suffered a few, preventable defensive errors that have been addressed.”
Junior Sammi Schulte scored the Lakers' only goal on a breakaway towards the end of the second half.
The Fernley win was a seesaw battle, with the Lakers trailing by a goal before tying the score at 1-1, then going down 2-1, tying the score again, and finally taking the lead for good on a go-ahead goal by Emily Pieper assisted by Tenaya Driller. Schulte also scored on an assist from Nicole Younger, who added an unassisted goal in the win.
Spanish Springs, a bigger and faster team overall, Rockwood said, scored both goals in the first half before the Lakers played them to a 0-0 tie after the break.
“We need to work out a few kinks in the coming practices, but the season is looking great,” Rockwood said.
