Labor Day closings
The Sierra Sun and North Lake Tahoe Bonanza offices will be closed to honor Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 6, dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. Banks, Nevada and Placer County offices, Tahoe Truckee Unified Schools and alternative schools will be closed. Select health care practitioners will be closed, however, retail and grocery stores, recreational facilities and dining establishments will be open for business. Call ahead for hours and reservations.
Dog days of summer
Gold Country Kennel Club, an all-breed dog club located in Nevada County, is gearing up for their annual dog show. Almost 1,500 dogs, representing most of the more than 170 breeds of purebred dogs now recognized by the American Kennel Club, will be entered in the shows at the Nevada County Fairgrounds, Sept. 4 and 5. There will also be several specialty shows on Friday, Sept. 3. Admission to the show is free. Day of show parking is $7 for a single day or $10 for a Multiple Day Pass. The show starts both days at 8 a.m., Nevada County Fairgrounds, 11228 McCourtney Road, Grass Valley.

Tahoe Conservatory of Music is holding registration for its new school year. Find the music inside of you for all ages. Classical training, rock star/jazz training and adult programs available. The Truckee North Tahoe Transportation Management Association Board of Directors is accepting letters of interest to fill a vacancy for the Kings Beach-Tahoe Vista Board Seat. Applicants must be residents or business representative of the Kings Beach-Tahoe Vista or represent a business located in the area. Preferred qualifications include current employment or involvement in the transportation field, knowledge of regional and local transportation issues and commitment to the TNT/TMA's goal of improving air and water quality and economic stability through development of transportation resources. The Martis Creek Campground Amphitheater, take Highway 267, two miles south of Truckee and turn left at Martis Creek Lake, follow signs to campground. Park outside of the campground entrance in parking area on left. Amphitheater is in the center of the campground; enter just past site 8. Sept. 4: BATS! Join astronomer Don Machholz for a guided tour of the heavens Sept. 4 at 8 p.m. Bring a flashlight with something to mute the light and warm clothing for the twilight chill. Telescopes, star charts and expert knowledge supplied to help you discover how vast the universe appears from 5,800 feet. For information call 426-3609.
Cruise Tahoe with NLT Historical Society
The North Lake Tahoe Historical Society is hosting a Labor Day dinner cruise on the Tahoe Gal. This is a great way to relax with friends new and long-term after a busy summer. Cruise includes beautiful views, dinner, coffee and dessert. Cruise boarding is at 5:30 p.m. and departs at 6 p.m. from the Tahoe Gal pier by the Post Office in Tahoe City. Tickets are not mailed for the event. Our greeter will have a guest list at the dock. Cost: $60 for members, $65 non-members. Call the Gatekeeper's Museum for information at 583-1762.

The League to Save Lake Tahoe is sponsoring the 13th annual Tahoe Forest Stewardship Day and is looking for volunteers Saturday, Sept. 11 at North Tahoe Regional Park. The event will combine field education in forest ecology, defensible space, best management practices, wildlife biology and natural history with hands-on forest restoration projects. Following the day's rewarding restoration work will be a volunteer appreciation lunch with guest speaker. Also looking for qualified team leaders to work with teams of 10-15 volunteers. If you enjoy working with people, have field experience in a natural resource discipline and believe in the value of community involvement with public lands, please consider being a team leader for this year's Tahoe Forest Stewardship Day.
