TRUCKEE, Calif. — Whether your body is sore from skiing or you're searching for another way to get strong for winter activities, Truckee's newest heated yoga studio has a class for you. Offering a variety of yoga and fitness classes, including power vinyasa flow, hot yoga, après ski yoga and yin, Studio Tahoe caters to both the mountain athlete and beginners.
Shaelah Morris opened Studio Tahoe in the Pioneer Center in October. Morris, who has taught Bikram and power vinyasa classes for 15 years, has trained with Baron Baptiste, Rusty Wells and Janet Stone. Morris formerly owned two studios in Tahoe City: Bikram Yoga Tahoe and Mountain Lotus Yoga. After a one-year absence to fine-tune her yoga skills in the Bay Area, Morris is back with her unique style of Bahkti yoga.
“I'm committed to bringing Bhakti yoga — the yoga of love and devotion — to Truckee and working with mountain athletes,” Morris said. “That's my passion.”
Morris, who was a professional big mountain skier, discovered yoga after suffering ski injuries and knee surgery. She found yoga helped her rehabilitation.
“It completely amazed and inspired me to help other athletes heal through yoga,” she said.
Not only did yoga help her recover, Morris discovered it also made her a better skier.
“It helped my focus and really improved my skiing,” she said. “The breathing and the ability to focus gave me a new sense of confidence on the mountain.”
All of Studio Tahoe's yoga classes are heated, ranging from 100 degrees for hot yoga to 90 degrees for power yoga and 85 degrees for flow classes. The heat increases flexibility and heart rate and purifies the body.
“It increases your metabolism and helps the body rid itself of toxins,” Morris said. “It brightens your skin and gives you a fresh, healthy glow.”
Classes are taught to upbeat, hip music.
“We are into keeping it fresh and helping people to have fun and feel good and heal their bodies,” Morris said.
While the power classes are designed for advanced yogis and athletes, Studio Tahoe has classes for all levels. Morris said flow basics, yin yoga, mellow flow and hot yoga are all great for beginners. Après ski flow or après ski yin is a great way for skiers and riders to stretch the most-used muscles, particularly hips, lower back, hamstrings, quads, knees and ankles. The studio also has fitness classes, which are not heated, like booty camp and core conditioning. And for parents, there is $5 yoga childcare on Sundays at 11 a.m.
Studio Tahoe has an eco-boutique with locally hand-made jewelry and hats, as well as mats and yoga apparel by Tonic, Beyond Yoga, Faith Hats, Stay Human and Manduka. There are also new showers.
The studio is running a “New Year New You” special for locals through Jan. 31: 30 days for $30. For vacationers and second homeowners, the special is three classes in one week for $30.
“I'm really about inspiring people to live a happy, balanced life,” Morris said.
Studio Tahoe is located at 10775 Pioneer Trail in Truckee. For more information and class schedule, visit yogastudiotahoe.com or call 530-587-1891.
