OLYMPIC VALLEY, Calif. — Squaw Valley USA is slated to open for skiing and riding on Wednesday, officials said Tuesday.

The Lake Tahoe resort recently received more than half foot of snow, and snowmaking efforts have been going full force since Halloween, according to a press release.

The National Weather Service has noted that La Niņa, which brought a record-breaking 810 inches to Squaw last winter, has re-emerged in the tropical Pacific Ocean and is forecast to gradually strengthen and continue into winter — meaning possible repeat large snow totals for this winter season.

Skiers and riders can kick off winter Wednesday by taking turns on the slopes accessed by the Red Dog and Exhibition chairlifts, scheduled to spin from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Squaw Valley's Snowsports School will be open in a brand new location, offering private and group lessons to help skiers and snowboarders get back in the groove.

Squaw's renovated ski and snowboard rental shops will also open Wednesday with a full new rental fleet of top of the line Salomon skis and boards.

According to the press release, opening day marks the soft opening of Squaw Valley's new SnoVentures Activity Zone, offering new mini snowmobiles for kids and snowtubing for the entire family.
