Toys for Tots event at Sunnyside
Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, will celebrate its 25th consecutive year as a participant in the United States Marine Corps Reserve's Toys for Tots program, offering two kick off parties. Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage is also inviting the public to its second Toys for Tots community party, Friday, Dec. 9, 4-9 p.m. at Sunnyside Resort and Lodge, 1850 West Lake Blvd., Tahoe City. Free appetizers, desserts, cocoa and refreshments will be served, live music will be provided by Sheldon Felich and Band, and Santa will be present for photos and to hand out candy canes. Resort at Squaw Creek's Magical Memories
Magical Memories days will feature events such as breakfast with Santa, holiday concerts, caroling, children's holiday crafts, an ice carving demonstration, Menorah Lighting, winter wonderland stories, moonlight snowshoe tours, snowman making contests, elf tuck-ins, movies for the kids, and ski film movie nights in Sandy's Pub. Major musical presentations are offered on Dec. 10 and 11 with a holiday performance by the Truckee Tahoe Community Chorus, and on Dec. 16 with Handel's Messiah performed by TOCCATA.
On New Year's Day, a legion of brave souls will greet 2012 with an icy splash into one of the resort's unheated swimming pools for the Polar Bear Plunge. Holiday Warm Clothing and Book Drive
Donate new or gently used warm clothing and children's books. The North Tahoe Hebrew Congregation has participated in a Holiday Food and Clothing Project with other congregations since 1989. Starting in 2001, the North Tahoe Hebrew Congregation took over directing and managing the event. Each year, on the Saturday before Christmas Eve, the event provides food, winter clothing and books to local families in need. Last year, the project supplied more than 26,000 pounds of food to more than 1,100 people. Warm clothing, particularly for children, and children's books are the focus of the project.
This year, there will drop-off locations at the eLearning Cafe, Forever Rox, High Altitude Fitness, Incline Recreation Center and Starbucks in Incline Village, and Plumas Bank and Tahoe Expedition Academy in King's Beach. Tahoe Expedition Academy is partnering with the North Tahoe Hebrew Congregation to provide and monitor the barrels placed around at the drop off locations.

The Shop Local Contest is happening now throughout Tahoe City, Kings Beach and Incline. The Tahoe City Downtown Association, North Tahoe Business Association and the Incline Community Business Association are hosting the 5th Annual Shop Local Contest through Jan. 3. New this year, two grand prizes are up for grabs; a $500 Tahoe Dave's Gift Certificate and a two-night stay at Shooting Star B&B, as well as many other great prizes. Pick up a free Shop Local Card at participating businesses. For every $20 spent, you'll receive a sticker. Cards with three or more stickers are entered to win. Cards with 13 or more stickers are entered into the Grand Prize drawing. There are many opportunities throughout Tahoe City to uplift families in need during this holiday season. Stop by a business with giving trees such as Mumbo's Mountain Outfitters, A Sante Lakeside Fitness and Plumas Bank. Grab a tag from the tree and purchase the item as a gift for a local family in need. Drop off a new toy donation for Toys for Tots at Coldwell Banker or Plumas Bank. Plumas Bank is also a drop-off location for non-perishable food items for Project MANA. Every item donated will make a difference for someone in need in our community.
Holiday Hope: Adopt a Family
The North Tahoe Family Resource Center, Tahoe SAFE Alliance and the Placer County Sheriff's Office are hoping to make a difference for families in the community this holiday season through the Holiday Hope Adopt-a-Family Program. Holiday Hope is a rewarding way to celebrate the spirit of giving through the holiday season.
Last year, more than 100 families received meals, toys, and warm clothing through the program. With support from the community this holiday season, these organizations hope to again provide relief to families who face every day challenges, job loss, or unexpected hardships. Families can be adopted by a group of friends, business, family or individuals. Adopting a family will help provide warm clothing, food and toys to families that would otherwise go without. Each family is carefully paired with a donor or donor group and it is up to the donor's discretion as to how much to contribute. Gifts are due Dec. 16 and will be delivered to the family a week prior to the holidays.
