NORDEN, Calif. — A 7-year-old boy died Tuesday from injuries suffered after falling 60 feet from a chairlift Sunday at Sugar Bowl Ski Resort.

The boy was identified Wednesday by family and friends as John Henderson from Davis, Calif., according to various reports.

“It is with great sadness that we report the boy passed away earlier (Tuesday),” said John Monson, director of sales and marketing at the Donner Summit ski resort, in a press release. “The entire Sugar Bowl community extends our heartfelt thoughts and prayers, love and support to the boy's family.”

The incident occurred at about 11:15 a.m. Sunday. The boy, a member of the Sugar Bowl Ski Team, fell from the Mt. Lincoln Express chairlift, Monson said earlier this week. According to published reports, it was a 60-foot fall onto a hard-packed surface. He was wearing a helmet.

The boy was riding with two other ski team members of around the same age at the time of the accident.

Members of the Sugar Bowl Ski Patrol immediately responded, Monson said, and the boy was transported via helicopter to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno.

According to reports, the boy had surgery Monday to remove portions of his skull to relieve building pressure on his brain, and he remained in intensive care in the hospital's pediatric ward.

The incident is under investigation by regulators from the State of California and resort personnel. It is unknown if the chairlift's safety bar was down or not at the time of the fall. According to reports, Monson said the chairlift in question was and continues to be in proper working order.
