’90s rock groups, Primus and Clutch, perform at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on Aug. 17

Primus rocks Stateline's Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on Thursday, Aug. 17.

Go back to the rock renaissance of the ’90s with Primus and Clutch, who headline Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on Thursday, Aug. 17.

“Primus is responsible for some of the most cutting edge and original rock music of the 1990s. And now, the definitive Primus lineup — singer/bassist Les Claypool, guitarist Larry LaLonde and drummer Tim Alexander — is back together and planning on getting the worldwide masses bobbing up and down in unison once more,” states Primus’ Facebook biography.

While the group formed in 1984, it wasn’t until the end of the decade that they began gaining notable popularity.

“With most hard rock/heavy metal acts at the time either neatly falling into either ‘thrash’ or ‘glam’ categories, Primus joined a variety of underground bands that refused to be pigeonholed (and by the early ’90s, had fully infiltrated the mainstream) — merging metal, funk, alternative, punk, country, roots rock and experimental music, along with Claypool’s penchant for witty and often humorous storytelling lyrics,” continues the bio.

Throughout Primus’ tenure, the band has performed alongside artists such as Jane’s Addiction, Rush and U2, and released a multitude of hit records like “Suck on This,” “Sailing the Seas of Cheese,” “Pork Soda,” and “Tales from the Punchbowl.”

Primus is joined by rock band Clutch (known for songs like “The Regulator” and “Spacegrass”) for the South Shore gig.
