Truckee’s Faulkner Architects wins Merit Award

TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. — Faulkner Architects recently won a Merit Award from the American Institute of Architects in Sacramento. The award was given in recognition of Greg and Lesa Faulkner’s newly completed residence located in the East Bay foothills of San Francisco.
The Lafayette house is aggressively dug into its infill site which provides earth shelter and preserves and frames a distant view of Mount Diablo from the neighborhood. Board formed concrete supports a collaged assemblage of room-sized forms that inhabit a steep slope and culminate in a vessel like pool with an exposed edge 14 feet from the hillside below.
Rusted steel sheathes the outer layers of the form to help protect the structure from wildfire and gives way to reclaimed redwood siding and IPE decks at people places. Glass roofs shelter entry points and allow light through to glass floors that open paths for afternoon sun to penetrate deep into spaces below grade. The lowest deck cantilevers over a hillside garden path of crushed reclaimed concrete. Plantings of silver and rust provide continuity in color with the built environment.
A net zero photovoltaic solar array and solar heating panels for the pool contribute actively to the sustainability of this house. Recycled content materials were sourced for steel framing and siding, gypsum board, wood siding and insulation. Recycled glass serves as light emitting mulch for planters and is under laid with strip LED light fixtures.
The 5,500-square-foot house consists of five bedrooms and four-and-one-half baths organized on three levels, plus garage space for three cars fitted with a charging station for electric vehicles.
Inside, radiantly heated, ground concrete floors inlaid with steel are demarked by ebonized walnut screens and soft plaster walls tinted to match the East Bay hills in summer. The consistency of this constrained materiality runs through the furnishings of walnut and steel by David Gulassa. The interior was designed by Ms. Faulkner.
Faulkner Architects maintain offices in Berkeley and 12242 Business Park Drive, No. 18, in Truckee and is currently engaged with houses in the East Bay, Martis Camp, Lahontan, Alpine Meadows, Incline Village and on Lake Tahoe.
