#GivingTuesday to benefit nonprofits, Nevada County
November 23, 2013
TAHOE/TRUCKEE, Calif. — Bargain-hunting and crossing names off holiday lists dominate Black Friday and its fast-growing competitor Cyber Monday.
After bumper-to-bumper parking lots, crammed aisles and shopper's remorse, the Center for Nonprofit Leadership of Nevada County is asking charities, businesses and individuals to embrace #GivingTuesday on Dec. 3, when every gift is appreciated.
#GivingTuesday encourages communities to get involved with nonprofit organizations by donating money and volunteering. Nonprofits are charged with connecting their fundraising efforts or schedule volunteer projects as part of #GivingTuesday.
The one-day event is to educate the community about nonprofits' efforts, encourage residents to participate, and play a larger role in charitable giving. #GivingTuesday started the Tuesday after Thanksgiving 2012 in New York City and has become a mini holiday with almost 4,000 partners nationwide.
“The atmosphere at Salvaged is so unique to Tahoe and is in part designed as a community gathering spot.”
The Center for Nonprofit Leadership takes the lead on behalf of 53 member organizations, posting #GivingTuesday messages and directing people to the http://www.cnlsierra.org membership page, where they can donate online to local membership organizations, or follow the CNL on Twitter and Facebook.
"Nevada County is, and always has been, a very generous community with its donations and volunteerism," said CNL Chairman Bill Neff. "But we're also a community with great need and we want to make sure that residents know how our members help and play a major role in making Nevada County the best possible place."
Nevada County residents donated $39.1 million to local nonprofits in 2012, about $2,200 per family, or 4 percent of their median income, according to The Chronicle of Philanthropy. The community's largesse has assisted many charities, from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Nevada County to Welcome Home Vets.
what if we gave more?
A 1 percent increase of annual income per individual donor is about $570 more, based on the county's median income per year. Another $11 per week, about the cost of a few espressos or lattes, would help needy residents through a variety of nonprofit programs.
"It's definitely something to consider as we enter the holiday season, when our focus is so often about our busy lives and getting just-the-right gifts, rather than embracing the true spirit of the season," said Neff. "And GivingTuesday is a great day to start your commitment, regardless of how much, to the community and your neighbors."
